A family photoshoot is a beautiful way to capture memories that you will cherish for a lifetime. Whether it’s to celebrate a milestone or just to capture the essence of your family at a particular moment in time, a well-executed photoshoot can result in stunning images that tell your unique story.
Here are ten tips to help ensure your family photoshoot is a success:
1. Choose the Right Photographer
Find a photographer who specialises in family photography and whose style you love is important. Look at their portfolio to ensure they capture the images you want for you and your family and more importantly within your home. At Timeless Images, we pride ourselves on creating a comfortable and friendly atmosphere to bring out the best in every family.
2. Plan Your Outfits
Coordinating outfits can make a big difference in your photos. Choose colours that complement each other and avoid overly busy patterns.  So for example, all of you in pastel colours and one person in a red or black top. Your eye will naturally be drawn to the person in the darker top. If you can have a united look this will create an overall more pleasing image. You don’t all have to match exactly but toning is a recommendation overall.Â
3. Timing is Everything
If you have children with you, please make sure the photoshoot is not planned when they would usually be having a nap or lunch. A tired/hungry little one or even a teenager does not bode well for a relaxed and fun photoshoot. Most studios will be happy for snacks to be given during the shoot or for you to change the time to ensure that everyone is happy!
4. Make it Fun
A family photoshoot should be enjoyable, not stressful. Bring props, toys, or activities that your kids love to keep them engaged and that could also be included if appropriate. Play games, tell jokes, or even have a little dance to keep the mood light and natural.
5. Capture Candid Moments
While posed photos are great, candid shots often capture the true essence of your family. We will encourage natural interactions—hugging, laughing, playing—to get those authentic reactions and moments.
6. Be Yourself
Authenticity shines through in photos. Relax and don’t try to force smiles. Instead, focus on being yourselves and let your personalities shine. The best photos often come from spontaneous, genuine interactions.
7. Prepare Your Kids
Explaining to a preschooler or teenager what you expect from them during the photoshoot is not easy at all, so it may be best for them to discover this by themselves! You can explain that it will be fun and allow them to bring a favourite toy or wear something they love. The more comfortable they are, the better the photos will turn out.
8. Trust Your Photographer
Professional photographers have a keen eye for details and know how to make you look your best. Trust their guidance on poses and timing. If your little ones or teenagers are not on form, leave that to the photographer to manage. Try to let the photographer communicate and give instructions to your children. A parent’s instinct is to get involved but this may be the first experience they have of having a photoshoot so if you can leave the photographer to do their job that would be great. They may not know your child, but they have expertise in getting them to do as they ask. Their expertise is what will make your photos truly stunning.
9. Enjoy the Moment
Finally, remember that the photo shoot is designed to capture your family’s love and connection. Don’t stress about every little detail. Relax, enjoy the time with your loved ones, and let your photographer work their magic.
10. Make it a Day to Remember
Your photoshoot may only be about an hour but getting the family together may not have been an easy task to arrange, so how about spending the rest of the day together? Whatever time you choose for your photoshoot, there will always be time for coffee/tea and cake before or afterwards!
