Why Family Photoshoots Matter More Than Ever in Today’s Modern World

I have been pondering this over the last few weeks, and how life looks very different from how it did five or even ten years ago. I was 29 when I got my first mobile phone, and yet now, I can’t go anywhere without it!

Our phones are full of thousands of images. We capture birthdays, school runs, holidays, pets being silly, and everyday moments in seconds. Yet despite having more photographs than ever before, many families are discovering they have very few images that truly tell their story.

Professional family photography isn’t becoming less important — if anything, it has become more valuable.

We Take More Photos, But We Print Fewer Memories

Most family memories now live on phones, hidden among screenshots, shopping lists, and endless camera rolls.

Professional photographs create something different. They become intentional. They are displayed on walls, placed in albums, gifted to grandparents, and revisited for years. Instead of existing in digital storage, they become part of everyday family life.

Years from now, your children won’t remember what device you used to take pictures — they’ll remember seeing themselves loved, included, and celebrated.

Children Grow Faster Than We Realise

Every parent says it: “I can’t believe how quickly they’ve grown.”

Being In The Photo Matters

As photographers, our first family photoshoot took place at a training day for photographers. With a lot of bribery for new clothes and a visit to a football stadium, we had 15 other photographers watching while we had our images taken. This is not how most people have family photoshoots, but it is true that one person becomes the unofficial photographer.

They capture birthdays, holidays, and milestones, but are rarely in the frame themselves.

Professional photography gives everyone permission to step into the memory together.

Years later, children won’t care whether Mum thought she looked tired or Dad said he hated having his picture taken. They’ll care that everyone was there.

Modern family life is full. School runs, work schedules, activities, and constant notifications leave little room to pause. A family photoshoot offers something unexpected: uninterrupted time together.

There is laughter, conversation, cuddles, and moments that happen naturally when everyone slows down for an hour.

We had a lady visit us many years ago, and when she chose an image to be printed in a 32″ frame, I called her to question it. The image only showed the profile of 2 of the 5 people in the photograph; all that was visible of the other 3 was the top of their heads. She said that was her family, and at that, when she looked at the image, she could remember the peals of laughter and how happy they all were!

Many families arrive thinking they’re just having photographs taken and leave saying it felt like quality time they didn’t realise they needed. They enjoy uninterrupted time, just as a family unit, connecting as they may not have in a very long time.

Photographs Become More Valuable With Time

One of the most remarkable things about photographs is that their value grows.

A photo taken today may feel lovely, but in ten years, it becomes priceless, and in twenty years, it becomes part of your family history.

The portraits you create now become the images your children and grandchildren look back on to remember where they came from.

You don’t need a special occasion.

You don’t need perfect outfits.

You don’t need everyone to behave flawlessly.

Families are beautifully imperfect and that’s exactly what makes photographs meaningful. Because one day these ordinary moments will become the ones you miss most.
