What to Wear for a Family Photoshoot:

A collage of a family photo.

Choosing outfits for a family photoshoot can be a daunting task. You want everyone to look their best without feeling uncomfortable or overdressed. Fear not! This guide will help you create a cohesive and stylish look for your family portraits.

The Golden Rule: Comfort is Key

Choose clothes that make you feel confident but ensure that you feel comfortable.  This is true for the whole family and is especially important for children.  They may become fidgety if their clothes are too tight or scratchy. Dress in clothes that allow you all to move freely and comfortably.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

This is one to consider but not overthink! However, gone are the days of everyone wearing identical outfits – the matching days of the 70’s are thankfully a thing of the past! Instead, aim for a coordinated look that will complement each other. Choose a colour palette of 2-4 colours that work well together. This could be neutrals like creams, grays, and browns, or a combination of complementary colours like blues and yellows.

Avoid Large Logos or Busy Patterns

Large logos or busy patterns can be distracting in photos. If you can opt instead for subtle patterns like small florals, stripes, or plaids that won’t overpower the image. Solid colours are always a safe choice and allow the focus to remain on your family’s faces rather than the pattern!

Timeless vs. Trendy

In 10 years, you may smile at your outfits.  This is something that you cannot really control but you can decide if you will go with the high fashion trend of today or a more classic style.  Classic styles that won’t look dated in a few years will give longevity to the images and ensure that your photos remain relevant and beautiful for generations.

Bring a Change of Clothes

If your session allows for it, consider bringing a second outfit. This gives you the opportunity to have a different look for some of your photos. A change of clothes can also be useful if you want to capture different looks – High Fashion/ Classic or Casual/ Formal. If you are bringing children with you, get them involved in what they want to wear.  At this point you may want to bring a change for them 1) to avoid conflict and 2) in case of accidents!

Preparing for a family photoshoot involves a little thoughtful consideration of outfits that not only look good but also reflect your family. By coordinating colours, considering textures, and ensuring comfort, you can create timeless images that you’ll cherish for years to come. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the experience of capturing precious moments with your loved ones.
